Thanks to everyone who donated!
There were close to 700 non-perishable items donated to the Calgary Food Bank! In conjunction to raising food, the students and teachers in grade 6 inquired into the food, it's nutritional components and value. Students have been inquiring into such aspects as: What is protein? What is phosphorus? How many calories are in pasta? How many mL are in 10 cans of soup? Can this be converted into liters? Furthermore, we as teachers are pushing their thinking to be deeper and to include: Is it important to eat calcium? How can we make better choices in food? Why should we even care about this? How can we make decisions that help us to be healthy? Please ask your child what they have learned and what they are excited to share about! |
October - November 2015
Current Math Project Underway! As we collect food donations for WE SCARE HUNGER the grade 6s will begin to investigate and explore our food. Some mathematical thinking and concepts to be considered are: weight / volume of foods donated, percentages and fraction of nutrients in foods, cooking and preparation times for certain foods and well as expiry dates. LOOK AT ALL OF THE MATH JUST ON OUR FOOD LABELS! Concepts learned and review August to October 2015 -fractions, decimals and percent, and how they are related -probability and outcomes in rolling dice, using a spinner and playing cards and relating that back to fractions and percent -reading and interpreting data in graphs which will connect to our upcoming Social Studies learning on local, provincial and federal government and the election |
